#MSZ0001:16  (Emerging Diseases)

  

*COURSE 1:  Stowaways! Diseases that are Sneaking Across the U.S. Border (ASNA Approval No. 2-0.1923) 

PURPOSE:  Health care personnel will be introduced to diseases that may accompany immigrant/refugee children and families to the U.S. Diseases discussed include: Multi Drug-Resistant TB; Syphilis; Scabies; Malaria; American Trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease); Chickenpox; Measles (Rubeola); Dengue Fever; and Hansen’s disease (Leprosy). While this list is not all inclusive, this course will better prepare health care workers to recognize and treat the diseases listed.


INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in this subject matter.


OJBECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to…

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of each disease;
  2. Discuss risk factors, laboratory testing, and any reporting requirements that may be pertinent for each disease;
  3. Explain appropriate treatment options.

*COURSE 2:  “Mommy, I Can’t Breathe!” Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) - (ASNA Approval No. 2-0.1937)


PURPOSE:  Healthcare personnel will increase their understanding of non-polio enteroviruses, including the enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), which appears to be the pathogen that
                    caused mild to life-threatening illness and deaths in children in multiple states.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Nurses and other healthcare professionals interested in this subject matter.


OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to…

  1. Discuss nonpolio viruses in general, symptoms and complications;
  2. Explain enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), including signs and symptoms, transmission, prevention and treatment, and surveillance/reporting of the disease;
  3. Review infection control measures.

OBJECTIVES  Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to…

  1. Discuss Zika virus, including symptoms, transmission, who is at risk, complications, diagnosis, and treatment;
  2. Discuss Zika virus, safe sexual activity, and pregnancy;
  3. Explain surveillance and reporting requirements for Zika virus.
